Her dentist, who ignored pleas by the patient and his dental assistant to terminate the procedure when vitals began to drop, is now facing accusations of malpractice and has had his license suspended temporarily. Study Finds Vitamin D Deficiency in Pregnant Women Could Lead to Cavities in Children


It appears that cavity prevention in children actually begins in the womb. A Canadian study found that pregnant women with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to have children with dental problems. Severe Drought Conditions Lead One City to Brush Teeth With Sewer Water


Experiencing the worst drought in recorded history has prompted one Texas city to resort to using treated sewage water for brushing teeth, showering and cooking. Although many Wichita Falls residents are less than pleased with the idea of “drinking toilet water,” officials are convinced it’s the best solution to their water shortage issues. New Study Provides Further Evidence of Link Between Oral Health and Heart Health


 
Multiple studies have revealed a link between oral health and overall health. But, a new study looks closer to find a strong association between periodontal disease and coronary heart disease. A study of 15,828 participants from 39 countries found a correlation between self-reported periodontal disease and heart risk factors, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and large waist circumference. Antibacterial Agent Improves the Effectiveness of Toothpaste


A new review published in The Cochrane Library found that patients who regularly used fluoride toothpaste containing the antibacterial agent, triclosan and a copolymer saw a noticeable reduction in the presence of plaque and gingivitis as well as bleeding gums and tooth decay. The study compared the use of toothpaste containing fluoride only with the use of a triclosan/copolymer toothpaste. While further research is needed, the ADA is not surprised by the findings.
