Straighter Teeth Faster Than Before
A team at NYU’s College of Dentistry developed a new dental procedure that reduces the amount of time patients must wear braces. The procedure utilizes a process called micro-osteoperforation in which dentists drill small holes into patients’ gums to create inflammation. This inflammation can help to speed up the rate of tooth movement, thereby limiting the amount of time patients are required to wear braces. For the full article, click here.

Tips for Keeping Your Kids’ Teeth Healthy This Halloween
With Halloween just around the corner, it is important to follow these simple tips to ensure your kids’ teeth remain beautiful and healthy. One of the most detrimental candies to kids’ teeth is the lollipop. Another frightening candy is the sticky and chewy one. Gummy bears and taffy can increase the risk of tooth decay.

Scientists Create Smart Tooth That Can Monitor Health Habits
Researchers have
created a “smart tooth” that detects how much time a person spends chewing,
drinking, eating, coughing and reading. The smart tooth capitalizes on the fact
that activities from chewing to drinking to tooth grinding, all cause the jaw to
move in varying directions. Sensors embedded into the teeth can gather
information and analyze what action patients are performing based on what way
their jaws are moving.

Can Brushing Our Teeth Actually Do More Harm Than Good
Conventional wisdom has us believing that it is always a good idea to brush our teeth after consuming food or sugary beverages. However, recent studies suggest that this can actually cause our teeth more harm than good. The acidity of the foods we eat can demineralize and weaken the tooth surface, making it more prone to decay, and scrubbing with a toothbrush can actually encourage this process. Same-Day Crowns Allow Dentists to Make a Crown While a Patient Waits
Whereas
traditional crowns used to require multiple dental visits and up to a
three-week waiting period, new digital technology allows dentists to make
crowns in less than two hours while the patient waits. The same-day crown system begins with
the dentist taking a three-dimensional picture of the tooth and adjacent teeth,
and then using software to design the crown. With the simplicity of a mouse click, the design is then sent
to the milling machine, which sculpts the tooth from a small block of ceramic.

Improving Your Children's Dental Health With Certain Foods
Because our
children always need one more reminder to eat healthy foods, foods that are
favorable to our health are also great for our teeth. Foods that are full of sugar, acid or are sticky can erode
the enamel on our children’s teeth and provide fuel for bacteria to grow. Eating foods like celery, pears, apples
and yogurt can stimulate saliva and help neutralize acid. Additionally, calcium
and phosphate-rich foods can help strengthen the surface of teeth. For the full article click here.

Shark Teeth: Naturally Cavity Fighting?
The Journal of
Structural Biology published a 2012 study that found that at least two species
of sharks, makos and tiger sharks, feature teeth whose outer coatings contain
one hundred percent fluoride.
Scientists have discovered that sharks' teeth are cavity-resistant
because their enamel is comprised of a chemical called fluoroapatite that is
impervious to acid-producing bacteria. The fact that sharks have teeth that
contain their own cavity-fighting fluoride and that they replace their teeth
throughout their lives, makes sharks models of dental
health. For the full article click

water after consuming 20 grams of dry Froot Loop cereal. Researchers then measured the plaque pH
levels to learn of the effects of each beverage. For the full article click here.

Cheese and PH Levels: How It Impacts Your Oral Health

What To Eat to Prevent Tooth Decay
One of the
quickest ways to identify a person with a diet poor in nutrition is to take a
look at his or her teeth.
Oftentimes, the first signs of poor nutrition show up in the mouth. Because the mouth is the initial point
of contact for food, the benefits, or lack thereof, of the foods we consume
immediately impact our dental health.
Eating a balanced and nutrient-rich diet full of dairy, fruits,
vegetables and water can improve oral health by preventing tooth decay and gum
disease.

According to a new U.K.-based study published in the Journal of

overwhelming presence of tooth decay in both children and adults can be
attributed to poor nutritional choices, such as sugary juices and sodas,
and overall oral health neglect. Costly procedures, fear of the
dentist and a general lack of concern are a few reasons why patients
avoid preventative dental care. Unfortunately, poor oral health can
significantly impact a person’s general health.

How Are You Proctecting Your Oral and Overall Health?
Studies have
repeatedly shown that unhealthy diets can lead to dental health problems such
as cavities and gum disease as well as overall health concerns including heart
disease, diabetes and cancer. The
Mayo Clinic suggests that inflammation of the body caused by oral bacteria can cause
heart disease, stroke and clogged arteries. To protect one’s dental health,
experts recommend an organic diet full of calcium- and phosphorous-rich foods
such as dark leafy greens, yogurt, broccoli, garlic, nuts and beans. Ignoring your dental health will not
only lead to dental decay, but it can also cause serious damage to your body’s
overall health.

Wisdom Teeth: When It's Time to Say Goodbye
Removing one’s
wisdom teeth has long been deemed a rite of passage, however recent reports
suggest a different approach to the emergence of wisdom teeth. Due to the possible risks of anesthesia

for patients. But the oral
surgeon’s group warns that seemingly harmless wisdom teeth may ultimately cause
disease or infection down the road.
Because it is impossible to predict which teeth will remain healthy and
which teeth will cause problems, some believe it’s better “safe than
sorry”. If you are experiencing pain,
bleeding or swelling of the gums, call Sonoma Smiles today to discuss your
options. Call Sonoma Smiles at
