Health Benefits of Nanodiamonds



Scientists from the UCLA School of Dentisty and the NanoCarbon Research Institute in Japan recently discovered the dental health benefits of nanodiamonds, which could be used to fight bone loss and treat the debilitating effects of osteonecrosis.  Sufferers of osteonecrosis experience bone loss due to reduced blood flow. Ho’s team discovered that nanodiamonds could deliver proteins that promote bone growth more effectively, efficiently and less painfully.

Scientists Create Smart Tooth That Can Monitor Health Habits

Researchers have created a “smart tooth” that detects how much time a person spends chewing, drinking, eating, coughing and reading. The smart tooth capitalizes on the fact that activities from chewing to drinking to tooth grinding, all cause the jaw to move in varying directions. Sensors embedded into the teeth can gather information and analyze what action patients are performing based on what way their jaws are moving.

Tooth Delivery System for Tooth Fairy


When Jeff Highsmith’s oldest son lost his first tooth, Highsmith realized he could redefine the Tooth Fairy experience for his children. Recognizing the amount of stress placed on the Tooth Fairy to visit millions of homes each year, Highsmith decided to lighten her load by creating a Tooth Fairy delivery system that would allow his children to ship their teeth to the Tooth Fairy for prompt payment. Same-Day Crowns Allow Dentists to Make a Crown While a Patient Waits


Whereas traditional crowns used to require multiple dental visits and up to a three-week waiting period, new digital technology allows dentists to make crowns in less than two hours while the patient waits.  The same-day crown system begins with the dentist taking a three-dimensional picture of the tooth and adjacent teeth, and then using software to design the crown.  With the simplicity of a mouse click, the design is then sent to the milling machine, which sculpts the tooth from a small block of ceramic.
